Subject: spelling - hash format

In my adventures of getting non-American spelling dictionaries, I came
across some hash files from Ispell installations. There was a british.hash
file in the Cygwin port of ispell referred to on the ispell pages. However,
putting this british.hash in my abiword dictionary folder had the effect of
turning off spellcheck -- no matter what language I selected, no words were
flagged as incorrect. On the other hand the british.hash I got from
sourceforge abispell worked fine, whether Australian or Canadian English
was selected.
What is the relationship between the list of languages in the Set Language
dialogue and the hash files used by Abiword and/or ispell?
Also, could I fool Abiword, building a hash dictionary for an unlisted
language but pretending it was Farsi or some other listed language I would
never use?
Regards,
Alban
