Im not sure but i think that this may be related to a recnetly fixed font
problem by which Abiword did not load all available fonts (it was being
too strict, and the fonts were in fact compatible)

for windows users at least there is always the option of using the built
in charater map program, which if im not mistaken is exactly what MS Word
gives you when you choose insert symbol.

if you could do a comparison and maybe put up a screen shot or 2 for
comparison on a web page and then mail us a link ill see about writing up
a full bug report
