You have hit the nail on the head there, thats exactly the attitude of
the Abiword developers, but as the project is run by volunteers the
developers will often work on features they want and worry about other
things later.

if you have a bugzilla account (and anyone can get one) you can submit
any specific bugs that are annoying you and vote for the ones you most
want fixed and this might help convince developers to work on your
requests (and it acts as a convienient reminder).
