behavior when saving

Here's a question about 9.6.1 with Windows 98:

If I start a new document and save it as an AbiWord file, I can then use the
save button or Control-S to resave quickly as I continue to work. But if I
start a new document and save it as an MSWord file, using the save button or
Control-S brings up the "Save File As" box, followed by " blahblah.doc
already exists. Do you want to replace it?" In other words, the
convenience of saving with the save button or Control-S is gone.

Even though AbiWord can save automatically (and I have it set to do so), I
like being able to save quickly with Control-S (after, say, making a crucial
change or coming up with an esp. nice sentence). Is there some reason why
the quick save doesn't work with .doc format?

By the way, what's a .bak file (in the automatic save option in
Preferences)? Is it a file-type specific to AbiWord? Where do these .bak
files get saved? I can't find anything about "bak" using the Help search.

I've been using AbiWord since 7.3 (I think)--it's great to see the program
get better and better.

Michael
