AbiWord Weekly News #117, (2002, week 45, released 2002.11.10)
Welcome to this issue 117 of the AbiWord Weekly News.
Welcome to the last of the disappointing AWN's (feature-wise) and the first Sunday-released AWN. Due to unexpected time constraints (ironically), some of the information is dated by a few hours. QA heros will return next week (along with bug linking and other features you probably appreciate). The AWN is reaching it's final phases of what you can expect consistently. Any comments that seem off or shouldn't be there probably shouldn't be there. This AWN maybe updated for the Weekly Prize Patch and any fixes I want to get in.
AbiFund information maybe updated monthly, QA will be more extensive and any changes you want to see in the AWN should get to me in the next couple of weeks.
Now, as for AbiWord, 1.1.1 was released this week, in the four month build up to AbiWord II: The Wrath of Dom, this version is even niftier. Will and Marc start a wv-like library for WordPerfect. And there's still some more dipping into learning how AbiWord's proprietary format works.
In this issue:
Editor(s) of this issue: E. A. Zen
If you're interested in using AbiWord for the first time, receiving a more uptodate version, any particular version or special release, feel free to visit the new Latest Releases page.
DISCLAIMER: It should be generally noted that anything said before the "In this issue:" line is purely editorial.
Discussions
Traffic on the developer mailing list has settled at about 200-400 postings per week.
This week, interesting topics on the developer list included:
-
AWN 116 updated. : In case you didn't notice, I updated the AWN to add some level of "it's just me, don't shoot the developers." So massively wrong was last week's AWN that most of the team had to call for emergency medical services. I guess comparing AbiWord and KWord to the Packers and the Bears was just a bit off.
-
New Bugzilla keyword proposal : Due to the commonality of occasional graphics issues, Andrew proposes a new keyword for bugzilla, "pixeldirt." Anyone playing with Martin's tables (upto this week, atleast) has seen this phenomenon; though, it does occur in various forms.
-
24 hours until release. , ATTN: Intent to release in roughly 13.5 hours and Tag: release-1-1-1 : Without closing a tree, Dom and Martin create 1.1.1. I haven't checked as to Release Notes or tarball, but I will update the statics page when I see them (would also be a good time to Abe Bigoda and see what links work).
-
DOC or RTF? : Sang, has realized our .doc is just a façade for a .rtf. This comes from the fact that Word will open most document formats that atleast claim to be .doc. Anyone that wants real .doc must enable debugging, yea, even if it goes to /dev/null.
-
Re: Help stepping through objects in a document : In case you missed last week's original, Dr. William Bland is curious as to how the Abiformat threads everything into a cohesive document. This is the end in which he thanks Martin for a generous code dump. Andrew points to a related bug, and Jesper explains a less elegant means of getting the same data (dump).
-
OpenOffice.org and AbiWord: Both happily displaying WordPerfect : Will announces that he and Marc have been working on making a general library for WordPerfect. Picture WV for WP. Now if only someone and RTF library...
-
Abiword XML format description : David Buddrige wants a decent DTD as a part of his AbiWord Technical Documentation Manual (not an actual title, but I'm on a roll). He's pointed to a somewhat dated document type definition here, by Frank.
-
commit: Make xft print properly (I think). : Incredible what a single line can do, as Martin's XFT fix for printing Martin wants to retag, but there appears to be some oddities with the menus.
This week, interesting topics on the user list included:
-
Can AbiWord do cmd-line data merging & printing? : Mike Hudson is looking for a small word processor able to print on demand without the need to load a suite of graphical bibble bobs. Dom informs Mike of our favourite --print command for the scriptor on the go.
-
Compilation stopped : Bernard Lambey quickly learns that Mandrake and AbiWord have issues, particularly when "statically" linked.
-
abiword differents arguments linux/solaris : Ramon finds that, despite having the same capabilities, the output from --help on Solaris and Linux differ.
-
Importing files : Steve Blackwell needs to find someway to embed a diagram for a project of his. Unfortunately, the best he could get was the tried and true take-a-screen-cap method.
-
core file : Bernard spends a week trying to get AbiWord to run on Mandrake. From libraries to sources, all fails but the very specific mandrake rpm.

POWs
The concept of a "Project Of the Week" is to single out tasks of major interest that outside developers might be interested in providing assistance to. Until a "best way" of listing POWs come to mind, they shall be listed in a short description. Any user interested is welcome to assist in tackling these POWs. If you know someone who's interested, you can link directly to a POW, in order, they're pow3 (at the top) through pow1 (at the bottom). Reminder to developers, I can't post them if you don't submit them. Additionally, feel free to announce if one of these is finished (in case you don't mention it on the list or in the cvs) Also, what a great way to get money from Dom!
Name: Style and/or Diction Plugins (bug 3281) (do either/or or both!)
Description: build a plugin to allow Abiword to check style and diction
Advertisement: me got no grammar fixer, help mes can't you?
Recommended Outline: Create a plugin for AbiWord that allows the checking of style and diction. The source code for the gnu style and diction tools is available here: http://www.gnu.org/software/diction/diction.html
As a prototype you might be able to hack something using the AbiCmd plugin to wrap the style and diction tools. The AikSaurus (Thesaurus) plugin should also be a helpful guide.
When you get the basics working you could try to get Abiword to display green squiggle underlines to mark errors, or otherwise work on a good user interface.
Comments: A great way to start playing with the AbiSource

Name: Fix Windows printing boogs (bug 3239)
Description: Tackle some or more of the various bugs that cause issues in attempting to print under Windows
Advertisement: ????????????????????????????? (no, that's really the ad!)
Recommended Outline: You must become magical to know how to fix this.
Comments: "The problem is that printing on Windows is broken with several brand of printer drivers (see dependent bugs). It appears that with standard PostScript driver it does not happen. It appears also that version 0.9.6 had less problems than 1.0.1 so we might find out where the regression is bu diffing.
"Please, be sure to read all the bug reports. Even partial fix are accepted.
"Fixes must be done against STABLE tree and possibly ported to HEAD (the later can be done as a second step)."

Flushed Bugs
What you see here are either invalid bug reports or duplicates. So, basically, I'm showing everyone else how doofy you are sometimes. On average*, confirming duplication or non-validity takes four minutes and thirty-five seconds. That's the equivelant of 8LLOC of time for Dom. Any other questions why development isn't as fast as you want?

Release HackDown
This is an AbiWord Weekly News original concept: The Release Hackdown. In the table below, you can watch what bugs are being fixed in preparation for the very next release. Check the key at the bottom to understand formatting.
No pressure, guys, I'm sure only 2000 or so people will be watching to see what you do weekly. That breaks down to about 285 people daily and 12 people hourly, so, it's like being peeked at once every five minutes, literally. "Isn't that veird!?"
