I've seen Ted; it's impressive in its functionality.

This is covered in the Abi documentation somewhere. I remember it being
called the SDI or Single Document Interface as opposed to MDI or Multiple
Document Interface. In other words, it's done that way on purpose. I agree
it's somewhat disconcerting if you're accustomed to things like Word or
