<H2>IntlFAQ: Changing Language</H2>

can work with menus and strings translated into many different languages by configuring the system properly:

_If you change the language, you may also want to install a spellcheck dictionary for the new language, see IntlFaqSpellChecking._

Windows 95/98/98SE/ME

Go to Control Panel->Regional Settings, and select a locale.

Windows XP

Go to Control Panel->Regional and Language Options

Unix

<pre> $ export LANG=sv_SE $ unset LC_ALL </pre>

in your shell initialization script (.bashrc or .profile).

Editorial Note

Rev 1.2 is incorrectly attributed to me. Im fairly sure that I would not have deleted any contributors name (Jesper Skov), but Im even more certain that I would not have added " $ export LANG=sv_SE $ unset LC_ALL" (because I wouldnt know that, and am fairly sure I would have remembered (and acknowledged) copying and pasting that from some other source).

I suspect that I may have (only) added the &lt;pre> tags around the above, and, like has happened elsewhere, TWikis revision record misattributed somebody elses changes. I need to remember to dig into the problem over on twiki.org and then report back here. _I wonder if Main.FredHamptons revision attribution will be overwritten by this (which would mean the problem is still occurring). IIRC, the problem on twiki.org was related to running out of temporary file space in some relevant directory._

_Update: The problem is not occurring now (on this last revision), so its either been permanently fixed, or it was a temporary problem that is at least temporarily "in remission" (better word?)._

_As long as Im editing this page, I guess I should add a contributors section, then delete this editorial on some future revision (after the 1 hour timeout)._

Im sure this is not the right page for this question, but Ive just spent the last hour trying to find pages referencing my questions about Abiword, to no avail. I hope someone can point me to the documentation, if it exists, for inputting non-English characters in Abiword.

I use Win XP, with the US-International keyboard layout. Abiword cant handle it, and behaves unpredictably. I dont have this problem with any other text editor or word processor Ive used. Given that Abiword touts its flexibility in terms of handling different languages is, my question is, how in the world do you all manage to input text requiring accented characters?

Also, Abiword produces question marks in place of text input with Microsofts Chinese IME.

I see nothing in the documentation regarding alternate keyboards, special characters or IMEs at all.

If Wordpad, and many many non-Microsoft programs can handle this stuff, why cant Abiword?

Thanks for your help.
