If you need a GPL Linux word processor with M$ Word
compatibility, consider AbiWord. It can be found at:
It's a work in progress (ver 0.7.4 currently) and doesn't have
some features yet, such as columns. But what is there is solid
and elegant.
I use SO 5.1 when I need complete M$ compatibility or Excel
spreadsheets, but it's a hog. When I just have to read or write a
simple Word doc, AbiWord is the way I go.
Also, their effort deserves support. I personally consider the
AbiSource project to rank up there with Samba as a M$ killer. Say
what you want about not trying to imitate M$ products, projects
like AbiWord cut away at the Evil Empire's roots.
Cross posted to the AbiWord list. Hope that's not inappropriate
(I may be the only person in the ether who's on both).
