BTW, the example table in my original e-mail was generated with the
excellent library with PhpRtfLite (LGPL license), available at:

It's the best open-source product I've found so far for properly
creating merged cells in tables in an RTF file.
Also, the following page on Wikipedia has been very helpful for a
single portal for RTF info:
