Maybe there is a need to look at this more closely. Personally, I
thought it could be built on top of the concept many others have used
before.. Maintain an external database in a BiBTeX style tool
(such as Pybibliographer), in AbiWord there would be an item (probably
a plugin) you can select (via a button or menu item) that would allow
you to enter the reference key, the plugin would then send a query to
the database (under linux most of the tools use named pipes for this),
the database would return the reference (again in a named pipe), the
plugin would then format and insert the reference in the document.
Of course, different platforms have different tools, so this would
probably have to be investigated a bit more to make such an addition
flexible enough to work across platforms.
The other approach would be to write an all-inclusive tool, ala
OpenOffice.org, which allows building and querying your database from
within the application itself. This would be more work, but might
be advantageous as the same code could be used on all platforms.
The major suggestion I would have would be to look at tools like BiBTeX
and natbib to understand the database and field structures needed for
this kind of tool.
