Maybe I have a temporary solution for you.

I had a similar problem using a recent version of Abi on an older system. I
filed bug #9782. Take a look at the comments about that bug. One of the
developers advised replacing my Abiword.profile with an older version
supplied on the bug page (I think it's attachment id 3573). When I downloaded
that and switched it with the newer profile, Abiword became completely usable
on my older system. It's an imperfect solution, and it may not work for you.
But it in my case it got me up and running.
