Printing: Error: ttftool: Incomplete TTF file (gentoo)

I have just installed abiword on my gentoo system. I use my system mainly as
a home server and don't want excess bloat on my system (hence the choice of
AW). I've used the "-gnome" USE flag, which means that gnome libraries
aren't installed. If I try to print a document, abiword dies with the
following console message:

Error: ttftool: Incomplete TTF file

I haven't managed to read much about this, but it appears that if you install
gnome, it goes away. Problem is I don't really want to install the 30
packages that get installed with the "gnome" USE flag.

Is there a workaround for this problem or can anybody point me in the right
direction as to which gnome packages/libraries are required for printing in
abiword. I'm not keen on embarking on a whole-day trial an error exercie!!

TIA
