>First, it's great to have gotten such prompt responses to my bug (#6493).
I'm not sure if stable is compiled with the codepage 437/850 support, so if you don't see that in the encoded text list
and you open a fair amount of DOS or Windows console text files,
you may want to try the Head (development) build. [2.1.1
for Windows should have been available today, but I got side
tracked and won't have time to build until Monday or Tuesday
whenever I return home.]

Basically AbiWord's source is stored in CVS for revision
control, with there being two primary branches Head and
Stable. Head is where most of the development occurs,
and Stable is generally restricted to bug fixes and the
occasional but well tested improvements so as to remain
a 'stable' version. Because the Head branch is where most of
the development occurs, it may not be very usable at times, or
may not even compile on some platforms for weeks at a time.
Backporting is simply applying fixes or other changes that
are in the Head tree to the Stable tree (alternatively
Forwardporting would be taking fixes from Stable and putting
them in Head). That's pretty much it, though I may be
glossing over some details.
