This is a Microsoft problem not an abiword problem.
Windows sucks, but I paid for it so I also continue to use it but the
latest version of Mandrake looks particularly slick and linux has made
lots of progress so I encourage you to use too or try it (try it again if
you have not done so recently) or any other modern up to date Linux
distribution.
In windows If you want an application to start Maximized then you need to
change the Properties of the shortcut.
Right click on the shortcut, choose properties. (At least in older
versions of windows) The Properties dialog will contain two tabs, General
and Shortcut, and from Shortcut you want to choose Run: Maximized from the
drop down list.
