Debain is not recommended for Linux Newcomers.
It is a fine distributions with good solid technolgy but it does not even
pretend to make things easy for beginners. There are however some Debina
based distributions that do make an effort to help beginners, just
dont say I did not warn you.

Using KDE should not be a problem.

Building from source is not a terrible idea. Time consuming, but I have
been able to do it without too much difficulty and if you are technically
inclined it is probably a better habit than using alien.

You can mix and match from different versions of Debian, I forget how
exactly, more importantly how to do so selectively for only a few special
    packages.

Debian Maintainer for Abiword Masayuki Hatta does a good job of keeping
Abiword packages up to date he really does.
    http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages2.pl?keywords=abiword&searchon=names&version=all&release=all
    abiword 1.99.2+cvs.2003.07.10-1
is listed but there may be a newer version available, if there is not I am
sure there will be soon. Using the slightly older Debian packages seem
    like a significatnly easier option.

Rather than to continue to make half assed suggestions I will instead stop
here and send mhatta a Carbon Copy of this message, as he is the one who
    best knows the answers.
