It sounds like your environment is set to en-US. Try adding the
following lines to your ~/.bash_profile (assuming you use bash):
LANG=en_GB
export LANG
That should reset the environment to en-GB, and Abi should notice
automatically.
If that doesn't work, you need to edit AbiWord.Profile. Go through the
builtin scheme (the first one listed) and copy all the lines including
en-US into the scheme labelled custom. Then change all the US to GB.
This will also change your menus and dialogues so that they are spelled
correctly.
The bug with language in a template not sticking has been fixed, but the
fixed version hasn't been released yet.
