There's a bug in bugzilla about this. I personally don't like the bug
and want to close it - AbiWord on unix looks for plugins in 2 locations
at startup:

/prefix/share/AbiSuite/AbiWord/plugins
~/.AbiSuite/AbiWord/plugins

Put the plugin in one of those 2 places and it will just work.
