Could not activate / load plugin

    Howdy! I'm new to the list. May I ask your help with plugins?

    I am running RH8 and AbiWord 1.0.2. I d/l what looked to be some useful
    plugins, but get an error message when trying to load them.

     From AbiWord I clicked Tools-Plugins-Install (no plugins show in my
    list), then I select a plugin from a set of *la and *so files located in
    /usr/share/AbiSuite/AbiWord/plugins. I get the error message, "Coud not
    activate / load plugin" whether I try automatic detect or *.so.

    Any hints?
