    you are not the only one with that idea. there is a Request for
    enhancement, i think it is pretty close to Tables in terms of bugzilla
    votes. It is also something that some of the developers are interested
    in so we will have to wait and see (and encourage where possible).

    Not an open source one, as far as I know

    Mathematica produces perfect MathML, they helped write the standard.

    There are a few LaTeX to MathML programs, and considering how ridiculously
    hard it is to hand write MathML is this looks like the best option.
    There are probably LyX to MathML converters.

    I have been meaning to checkout Open Office, specifically its Equation
    Editor, but for various reasons i have not yet done so.

    If you can spare the time to investigate and report back a summary of your
    findings I would be really interested to know.
