I have exactly the same problem. For various practical reasons, I have
no choice but to use Red Hat 6.2 on my box, without KDE and GNOME
installed at all (to save HD space). I DL'ed the static tarball (the
newest version that's up on the Abisource site), followed the
instructions, and upon running the program got the same error message that
Graeme Wain got. I have a good amount of UNIX experience, but I'm not a
sysadmin-quality expert. What can I do to fix this?
Steve
P.S. On the bright side, the static version works fine under SuSE 7.1,
even while running their XFree86 3.something server....
