The fonts you see are the only Freely distributable scalable fonts we know
of. There is Project of the Week to snoop around the Open Office project
and elsewhere on the net to find other freely distrubtable scalable fonts.

The other fonts you see on gnome are are bitmapped fonts or directly
anti-aliased using the freetype library. The first type are
printable. They'd come out all jaggy on a high resolution printer. The
later is too slow for a word processor.

OK now you have 3 choices to get better looking fonts.

1. There is a nifty little program availble to enable anti-aliased fonts
for gtk application - explictly for abiword in fact. Load that. I forget
the name - check out the Gnotices website. You'll need a good video card
that supports the Xrender extension in Xfree 4.10 or later.

2. Grab some MS True Type fonts from somewhere and follow the instructions
on how to install them. These are nice fonts but unfortunately MS Won't
let us distribute them. I wonder why?

3. Wait until we prot abiword to Gtk 2.0 with it's automatic support for
Xrender. You'll still the good video card and driver. I don't expect a gtk
2.0 abiword before Mark 2002 at the earliest.

Cheers

Martin
