What Hubert says matches my understanding, but I'd like present a
slightly different viewpoint:

A difference is that:

After you do a save or save as, further editing is done in the file you
saved.

After you do a save copy (to a different file name), further editing is
done in the original file, not in the file you saved.

(You can confirm this by noting the name of the file in the AbiWord
titlebar.)

As to open copy, I'll do some experimenting:

Ok, interesting. If you open a copy of a file, the titlebar does not
indicate a file name -- thus, when you go to save the file, you will
have to supply a name. I guess it makes it a little easier to make sure
that you are modifying a copy and not the original file (if that's what
you want to do).

I've determined this by noting the behavior in AbiWord for Windows -- if
somebody notices that this is not the intended behavior, please let me
know (or file a bug).
