Sounds like you're just trying to run it from a different user id than
the one that is currently authorized with the X server. For example, if
you su'd to root in order to do the install and then accidently tried to
run from that root shell window. Although root can do almost anything,
it cannot normally connect to someone else's X server by default.
Just go into a shell ("terminal") window that you can start other X
clients from (I often try xlogo to check) and start abiword from there.
You could use 'xhost +', but that's probably a bad idea if your computer
is connected to the Internet.
