I have no "foreign" keyboard, but simply an american one. In antique
times it was possible in (e.g. WordPerfect) to use a hexnumber, or two
keystrokes to insert a special character (e-accentgrave) in the text. Can
I do this with AbiWord too?

Yes I am using 0.7.8.
I tried to reproduce this problem, but I could not. I thought, that it had
something to do with the subsequent use of backspace and return keys.
Possibly it has something to do with the "pagenumber space" at the top of
the textsurface.
What I could reproduce was: when I use the backspace-key to place the
first line of a paragraph back to the end of the former paragraph, and
after that I use a "return" to restore the beginsituation, than some words
appear in the "pagenumber space".
It might be, that there is some connection between these two problems.
