I have had the same problem and solved it by installing the unixfonts
tarball (found on the download site) on the system where my X server
runs.

If you have a look at the AbiWord script, it adds the
/usr/share/abisuite/fonts directory (or something like that) to the font
path with xset +pf...

But if the display is not on the same machine as the program (and the
fonts), the directory is empty on the X server's side... so xset +fp
cannot find them.

If you install the fonts in the same path as on the machine running
abiword, the xset should work OK, and the program launch.

I think this should be stated in the FAQ as I couldn't find it on the
site before realizing what the problem was...
