AFAIK, nobody on the core development team believes that Java should be
used

for large-scale desktop applications.

As for cross-platform functionality, we're pretty proud of what we've

managed to accomplish "the hard way" -- tons of shared code in C and C++,

with a smattering of native calls where appropriate to each GUI toolkit.

Given what we've managed to accomplish on Win32, BeOS, and GTK, I'd say

we're doing pretty well. :-)
