i just updated most of the makefiles to properly set and use
the variable ABI_ROOT and eliminate the ABI_DEPTH variable.
this is both to clean up confusion and to make things work
when the 'abi' tree is named something else (as in 'abi-0.7.0' :-)
(as it is in the tarballs/zip files).

this was mainly to help eliminate problems with the peer
trees (expat, et. al.) referencing abi include files.
