I think I fixed it, via gross hack. GTK's combos now just want
the focus more than ever, so I had to filter out key presses
to deny them any key events... except for when the user is holding
down Alt. This lets GTK process menu accelerator events (like
Alt-F for the File menu).

Everything should work like it did some time ago. Spaces shouldn't
pop down the combo boxes. However, Alt-Space will. Don't press
that. :)
