I did this, it was why I complimented him on the styles work. If you were
feeling really enthusiastic you could provide the old look as an alternate
named style. Users with better browsers could then choose to "Use Style"
(and we can all be envious of Opera which has a load of client side
stylesheets too).

It might be nice to have a little more cool blue but I assumed the colour
scheme was an intentional part of the design. I am a stickler for
unvisited links being blue and underlined though, I think it makes it a
lot easier to pick out what text is actually a link. Your mockup doesn't
seem to specify different colours for visited and unvisted links either
(red or purple preferably for visted links but it is not important
compared to normal links being blue and underlined).

The faded out Welcome to Abiword isn't all that easy to read, you might
consider using something with a bit more contrast.

Does the redesign remind anyone else of the Tango website? (The
freedesktop.org initiave not the British soft drink with the silly
advert's.) Maybe that is the answer to my previous question about the
source of the artwork...
