openoffice writer format?

When I tried to open an .odt file saved with openoffice writer, the program
stopped responding. This was on windows

On linux, however I am able to convert .odt file to html using abiword
-to=html

The saved html file is OK, but font face, font color are lost and <ul>
bullets are converted to <ol>

I thought open document format supposed to use standart xml and xslt, so why
is then the styles are not preserved?
