Renato was the developer responsible for most of the code, he probably
can give you a much better feedback than I can. (I'm attaching my answer to
his email address, so he can send his reply)
From my point of view, AbiWord is a very mature software, we had little
problems porting it to the Maemo Development Platform. Basically, what I
would like to see happening, is moving the menus and glade dialogs to a
per platform or "per capability" approach. Possibly using a plugin-like
implementation, or something like that.
This way, developers interested in porting AbiWord to embedded targets
may just chose not to include features which don't make (much) sense in
their implementations.
(but I mentioned this "from the top of my head", I didn't gave it much
thought, so I can't say if it makes sense on the AbiWord source code, at all)
