local vs. sequenced revisions

    The preceding email got long, so I wanted to quickly highlight one thing.
    We seem to have (at least) two separate problems to solve here:

    1. how/when to detect/flag all changes in a single version
    2. how to represent changes from multiple versions simultaneously

    Key issues for #1 are whether to do so at edit time, or at export time, and
    if so how. For one starting point on thinking that through, see my previous
    message.

    Key issues for #2 are currently being addressed in the revision marks
    thread. I haven't thought those through at all.

    bottom line

    As always, I want to make this distinction explicit so that people realize
    when and whether they're talking past each other. I think the two issues
    are at least somewhat orthogonal.

    Obviously, we eventually need a design which works on both levels, but in
    the mean time, it may help to tackle each one on the assumption that the
    other can be solved.
